Grateful

Halloween has come and gone, and while Annika is disappointed, I am not shedding any tears. Halloween is fun because I have three little girls who love dressing up, but I am ready to move on to better things.

Like Thanksgiving, for example. Isn’t it fun to have a whole month where we focus on things we are thankful for? We need 12 of those months. As I look around me, at my generation in particular, I am struck by what I see as a sense of entitlement and a lack of gratitude. This is not to say that this applies to everyone, or that there aren’t problems in our world and society and that we shouldn’t work hard to make our communities and our world a better place. But I think we could also benefit from recognizing how good our lives are, from acknowledging the sacrifices that our parents and grandparents and great-grandparents made for their future, for us. We have much to be thankful for.

Today I am thankful for a little girl who sometimes acts her age, but most of the time rises to my high expectations for her. Especially when it comes to being a big sister, she is mature beyond her years. Annika became a big sister when she was hardly more than a baby herself. While we have our challenges, most of the time she is patient, selfless, and loving towards her two little sisters. There are not very many things that make me as happy as seeing the three of them happy together. I am grateful for the big sister in our house.

Mom - Beautiful picture, Erica.

Cristine - Gorgeous post and gorgeous picture!!!

Nate - I am super glad that we are not the only ones who have naked diaper babies around our house all the time. Or should I say, super grateful?

I miss you guys, move back to the states.

Monica - I super agree with this post and LOVE the picture that goes with it.

Emily - What a beautiful picture. And I feel the same way about Elizabeth. I can’t relate to being the big sister to multiples, but it’s gotta be hard. I am thankful that Elizabeth (and Annika) have risen to the occasion. What a blessing!

In an old house in Germany . . .

In an old house in Germany without any vines lived three little girls in one straight line.

They smiled at the good

and frowned at the bad

and sometimes they were very sad

They left the house at half past nine in one straight line in rain or shine.

The tallest one was Madeline.

She was not afraid of mice – she loved winter, snow and ice. To the tiger in the zoo, Madeline just said, “Pooh-pooh!”

And nobody knew so well how to frighten Miss Clavel.

Last night was our branch Halloween party and trunk or treat. I’m not sure that we will go trick or treating again this year, and my grandparents have been asking for a blog, so here it is. Annika and I came up with the idea months ago for a Madeline Halloween. Brad’s Mom came and brought fabric and patterns and taught me how to sew little dresses for the girls. In typical fashion, I finished sewing them all just in time. Annika is usually very reluctant to let me take pictures of her, but she loved the idea of a Madeline photoshoot. Lucy and Elise weren’t quite so excited. Annika and I have more plans for Madeline pictures, so maybe you will see some again.

Lucy and Elise were thrilled by trunk or treating. It didn’t take them long to figure out that if they held out their bag or a hat that people would fill it with candy. They shuffled from car to car saying “candy? treat?” Annika responded to each new gift of candy with a polite and oh-so-appropriate “merci!” By the end of the night they were sticky and positively beaming. Halloween is not my favorite holiday, but we had a great time. I wonder how many more years I’m going to be able to choose their costumes for them and eat all the chocolate out of their candy bags without them noticing?

And now one more picture before we go

And that’s all there is. There isn’t any more.

Uma - I JUST CAN’T TAKE THE CUTENESS OVERLOAD! This has got to be the most awesome blog post EVER! Great job on the costumes, Erica!

Becky - I’m not sure if “cuteness” can be over used. This blog will be the test. Cute, cute, cute. Thanks for sharing.

Mom - No more??? I want more! I want more!

Did you miss me?

Because I missed all of you…

I haven’t posted a blog in a long time, and I’ve been wanting to. Not that I feel really obligated to, or guilty about not doing it. I understand that as life goes, blogging is rightfully low on my priority list, below feeding my children, listening to conference, cleaning my house, helping Brad with applications, talking to my family . . .  you get the idea. But I missed it all the same. I enjoy the process of reflecting and writing and sifting through my thoughts, I suppose.

I haven’t been short on things to write about either. Only a few short days after Nani left, my parents flew in. They stayed for a couple of weeks, and we spent a long weekend in Belgium. I have hundreds of pictures that I would like share (and that’s really not an exaggeration.) But editing pictures has fallen down my priority list as well, and so I haven’t shared anything here for weeks and weeks. Then yesterday I was looking through my photo folders for something else, and realized that I had this series of edited pictures that I never shared. They were just sitting there, asking me post a blog. So, here they are:

In the few days in between our parents’ visits, we had a nice warm evening (one of the last of the year, I think). After dinner we pulled out the little barbecue grill and roasted marshmallows on our patio. This wasn’t our first time roasting marshmallows there, and I hope it wasn’t the last, but it was one I wanted to remember. The sun was shining, Brad was home from work, and everyone was happy. I was happy, standing in the background watching my little family around the make-shift fire pit. We ended the evening with only one burned finger, and plenty of sticky ones. Winter is getting closer every day and soon I’ll feel like the sun hardly makes an appearance at all. I’m glad I’ll have memories like this one to pull out on especially cold, overcast days.

Happy fall, everyone!

Cristine - I DO miss you but also completely understand that life comes first. I’ll just soak up the pics when I get them. I can’t believe how big your girls are getting. They are beyond precious! Love the sticky fingers!!!! Miss you guys!

Mom - Sticky Fingers, messy hair. . . ahhh the joys of a warm summer evening. Oh, wait. It’s the same in the winter as well! Well, lucky you!

Mary Anne Miner - Well in a word…YES. I have missed you. But you’re right, blogging doesn’t always make the high priority cut. But what you were doing while you weren’t blogging IS high priority. Love the pictures. And I can’t imagine what Germany is like now…winter on it’s way and all. Glad you were able to soak up a warm summer night. Here’s to sticky, happy fingers :)

Taniel - I kind of look like Annika when I eat s’mores. I guess I haven’t grown up yet, although in my defense, they are really hard to eat!
